The original series 930 Turbo became an instant icon, but the series 964 Turbo took the best of the icon and made it even better.

The Porsche Turbo is a car that resides in the consciousness of every car enthusiast around the world. This potent symbol of Porsche's endless desire to go racing takes on the most exotic super-cars and hyper-cars.

The original Turbo, the 930, was born of Porsche's goal to win with a turbocharged car in Group 4 and 5 racing. Like the revered 1973 2.7 Carrera RS before it, the 930 was a homologation special, a true giant-killer, lining up toe-to-toe with the Lamborghini Countach and the Ferrari 512 BB.

The 964 Turbo that followed the 930 Turbo refined the looks and improved the already savage performance of the 930’s turbocharged 3.3-litre engine. The 964 Turbo thus became a suitably ballistic flagship to head up the new and improved 911 range in the early 1990s.

The 964 Turbo is the absolute peak of 911 design, a combination of the narrow cabin, upright windscreen, and familiar profile, with the 3-piece Speedline alloy wheels covered by wider, shapelier wheel arches. Aero-styled cup rear-view mirrors, and that Turbo signature whale-tail completed the details. The 964 Turbo looks fresh and contemporary today, a testament to the enduring success of its design.

The 964 Turbo produces 320hp and 450Nm of torque, with a larger, more efficient intercooler, a bigger turbocharger, revised engine management, an additional oil cooler, and a lower pressure exhaust system than its predecessor. It's performance is astounding even by today's standards, with the ability to reach 62mph in under 5.5 seconds and a top speed of 170mph.

The way the 3.3-litre large single turbo engine delivers its power requires patience, hitting hard after the boost builds. Although its a very approachable daily driver with its sophisticated chassis and compact dimensions, the 964 Turbo still requires commitment and talent to exploit to the full.

The 964 Turbo is hugely entertaining, with the intoxicating and addictive hit of that big turbo boost kicking in. It's a proper driver's car, born from Porsche's original intent to take it racing before becoming a production car and supercar icon. The 964 Turbo is a 911 classic, a bona fide supercar that is genuinely useable, outrageously enjoyable, and staggeringly quick.

It's little surprise that the 964 Turbo is so coveted by collectors and drivers alike. Its rarity, short production run, and desirability make it a supercar like no other. It's a symbol of Porsche's commitment to excellence, a car that is both a work of art and a true performance machine. The 964 Turbo is the last of the truly brawny rear-wheel driven, single turbo models, and its legacy lives on to this day.
